In the USA, approximately 14 million windshields are replaced annually. Imagine the alarming amount of glass and chemical waste reaching landfills. However, instead of tossing valuable glass and other materials aside, there’s a more innovative option: windshield recycling.
It’s a great process where they give your busted windshield another chance and create something new.
So, if you’re wondering why windshield recycling is such a big deal, we’ll share everything here—from the environmental impact to the recycling process. So, let’s get started!
The Environmental Impact of Windshield Waste
Automobile windshield wastes are primarily generated in two ways:
- You got a windshield replacement because your existing windshield is damaged.
- New windshield glass is manufactured in the factory, leading to waste production during the process and after resizing.
These processes generate vast volumes of waste.
Without windshield recycling, an enormous amount of glass ends up in landfills. The glass then takes hundreds to thousands of years to naturally break down.
Further, windshields release chemicals and contaminants from the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) layer, which seeps into the soil and enters natural waterbodies.
However, the excessive burden on landfills isn’t the only issue at hand. The manufacturing process also generates loads of waste, such as offcuts, glass scraps, and wastewater with chemical contaminants from the glass.
Without a proper waste disposal system, it can cause significant environmental and ecological impacts. Moreover, new glass production for windshields also consumes high volumes of raw materials, such as soda ash, silica, and limestone, and energy!
The only solution to this issue is modern windshield recycling plants.
The Composition of Windshields
Laminated glass is the most commonly used and effective windshield type in modern cars. It contains a PVB layer, a bonding agent sandwiched between two layers of glass.
The PVB layer makes the windshield durable enough not to break down into shards when something hits it.
The multiple layers boost safety and functionality. Laminated glass also offers UV protection and cuts out outdoor noise.
Other types of windshield glasses are also available on the market, but they are usually not offered by default.
Let’s familiarize ourselves with these options and their compositions:
- Acoustic Laminated Glass: This has acoustic interlayers along multiple glass layers.
- Heated Windshield Glass: It is embedded with heating elements to melt accumulated snow and ice on windshields.
- Tempered Glass: This is regular glass strengthened using a specialized quick heating and cooling process. It is more heat resistant than glass.
- Infrared-Reflective Windshields: They have a special coating to partially reflect the sun’s infrared rays.
The Windshield Recycling Process
The car windscreen recycling process is complicated due to the several glass and plastic layers. It involves numerous meticulous steps to maximize the reuse of glass and PVB material. This reduces waste generation in the overall process and protects the environment from severe impacts.
Collection and Transportation
First, a recycling partner collects windshield glasses from different pickup points, including auto repair shops, dealerships, and even recycling centers. They are taken to specified recycling plants.
Inspection
After the glass arrives at the plant, experts inspect the collected windshields that are suitable for recycling. If any glass is heavily contaminated or cannot be cleaned, they are not recycled.
Special machinery crushes and shreds the windshield, breaking down the laminated glass into several smaller pieces. Then, with heat or chemical treatment, the glass and PVB materials are separated.
After PVB removal, the glass is sent through a processor to grind it down. Any remaining plastic is sieved out, and the glass powder is made to fall on a moving conveyor belt.
The belt takes the glass to another machine, where it is crushed again until it forms a glass cullet—finely ground glass.
Separation
In this step, they separate the glass and PVB layers. Then, they separate the layers of the suitable windshield pieces by pulverizing.
Cleaning
The glass waste may still have some contaminants. It is processed through different machines to remove contaminants altogether.
For instance, metallic contaminants can be removed by passing the cullet through a magnet. Ceramic pollutants are removed by passing the cullet through a finer sieve.
PVB is also sent through several processing methods to eliminate contaminants before recycling.
Quality Control
Experts undertake special quality check procedures to ensure that the material after recycling and cleaning matches industry standards. They ensure that glass is free of impurities and defects, especially before reusing it in high-quality goods.
New Product Manufacturing
In the last step of the recycling process, they give the recovered materials a second life.
Glass and PVB are sent to other factories for recycling:
- Glass Repurposing: The cullet can be recycled by melting and making new auto glass, bottles, jars, countertops, road bases, pool filters, fiberglass or insulation wool, and so on.
- PVB Repurposing: The separated and cleaned PVB is repurposed for new laminated glass, flooring materials, adhesives, paints, acoustic barriers, and construction additives.
Conclusion
Windshield recycling is essential in reducing waste accumulation in landfills and reusing valuable materials to generate new products.
